Oxford works differently — and for parents, the collegiate system is the single most reassuring structure in British higher education. Your child belongs to a college: a walled community with its own accommodation, dining hall, library, welfare team and a porters’ lodge staffed around the clock.
Every college accommodates its first-year undergraduates — usually on the main college site itself — and most guarantee housing for the majority of the degree. Rents vary by college; the range below is typical and often includes utilities, with affordable hall dining on top.

Oxford is a walking and cycling city — almost every college, library, lab and lecture theatre sits within a fifteen-minute radius.
Nothing to plan: lectures, libraries, dining hall and friends are all inside the same square mile. Most students buy a second-hand bicycle in week one.
Oxford Bus Company and Stagecoach run high-frequency routes along the High Street and St Giles’; the key hospital routes are 8 and 9.
Oxford station (15-min walk from the centre) — London Paddington in under an hour, Birmingham in just over one.
No airport of its own — but the coach link to Heathrow is so established that Oxford students treat it as a home terminal.
“The Airline” coach from Gloucester Green bus station — direct to Heathrow every 30–60 minutes, roughly 90 minutes, ≈£25.
Direct train from Oxford station in about 1 hour — a useful alternative with direct Doha flights.
Qatar Airways serves both Heathrow and Birmingham directly.
A porters’ lodge staffed 24 hours a day. A welfare team, a college nurse, subsidised dining, and a room inside the college walls.
