Engineering at the leading universities is now, by default, an integrated masters: four years ending in an MEng, the qualification the profession itself prefers. It also has the most mature placement machinery of any subject — a genuine, salaried year inside a top firm is a normal part of the degree.
Most top schools teach a broad base before specialisation — ideal for students who know they are engineers but not yet which kind:
Mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, electronics, materials and computing — taught through lectures and compulsory laboratory programmes.
Mechanical, electrical, civil, aeronautical, chemical or information engineering; major group design projects begin.
Advanced options and a substantial individual research or industry-linked project — this is what separates the MEng from a BEng.
the MEng is the direct educational route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status — the profession’s gold standard.
The heaviest formal timetable outside the clinical subjects: lectures, problem classes and long laboratory afternoons, with design projects that mimic professional practice.
Lectures, labs & classes — 20–25 hours weekly, essentially all in person — labs cannot be done remotely
Design projects — team-based, deadline-driven, assessed like real engineering work
Problem sheets & reports — 15–20 hours weekly; lab reports are meticulous and compulsory
Total load — a genuine 40-hour week — parents should expect a working schedule
Engineering placements are the most established in the university system:
a salaried year (£20,000–£28,000 typical) at firms like Rolls-Royce, Arup, Dyson, JLR or the energy majors — tuition that year is capped at 20% of the normal fee (≈£1,960). Universities with dedicated placement teams report the large majority of committed applicants are placed.
8–12 week paid placements after years 2 and 3 — the standard route where a full year isn’t taken.
several major employers sponsor students through the degree — bursaries plus guaranteed placements — and many placement students return to a graduate offer.
Engineering graduates split three ways: the profession itself, the technology sector, and — via the milk round — finance, where banks and quantitative funds prize the mathematical training. An MEng means your child can graduate at 22 with a masters, a year of salaried experience inside a world-class firm, a likely graduate offer from that firm, and a protected route to chartered status — all inside the standard student-finance envelope. Few degrees repay planning as richly; the planning is what we do.
