Mathematics is the purest test of ability the universities offer — and, quietly, one of the most lucrative. The quantitative funds and banks treat the top maths cohorts as their private recruiting ground, and the integrated four-year MMath is the standard route for the strongest students.
The subject bifurcates early into pure and applied streams:
Analysis, linear algebra, probability — school methods are rebuilt from axioms up. The step up is the largest in any subject.
Pure (algebra, analysis, topology) versus applied (mechanics, statistics, numerical methods); most students mix.
Specialist options and, on the MMath, masters-level material with a project — the route the top employers and doctoral programmes prefer.
Lectures deliver the material; the learning happens on problem sheets, defended in small classes — at Oxbridge, in supervisions of two or three students.

Maths has no formal placement year at most top schools — the pipeline runs through summers and the integrated masters:
masters-level breadth plus a project — the standard credential for quantitative finance and research careers.
the trading firms and banks run 8–10 week summer internships paying £8,000–£15,000+ for the season — recruited on campus from the top cohorts.
maths departments host employer problem-solving evenings and sponsored competitions — talent-tagging in its purest form.
Quantitative funds now pay first-year graduates £100,000–£150,000+ total compensation, recruited almost exclusively from a handful of departments below.
