Parent Course Guide
Medicine is the longest, most structured and most vocational of all undergraduate routes — five to six years of genuinely full-time training that ends with a guaranteed profession. It is also the most competitive application in the UK system, which is exactly where our consultancy does its most decisive work.
All schools now blend science with early patient contact, but the shape is broadly consistent:
Anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology, taught through lectures, dissection and small-group problem-based learning. Early clinical exposure at most schools.
Six-year courses include an extra science degree year — the student graduates with two degrees. Five-year schools offer this optionally.
Rotations through medicine, surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics and GP — full working weeks on the wards, on placement at NHS trusts.
Two salaried years (≈£36,000–£44,000) as a junior doctor, allocated nationally — employment is effectively guaranteed.
Medicine is the closest thing to a full-time job in undergraduate education. Attendance is monitored, clinical placements are compulsory, and the calendar runs longer than the standard university year.
Pre-clinical years — 25–30 hours: lectures, dissection room, labs and small-group teaching
Clinical years — 35+ hours on the wards — a genuine working week, including some on-call experience
Study load — a further 15–20 hours of consolidation weekly; the volume, not the difficulty, is the challenge
Holidays — shorter than other degrees in clinical years — parents should expect a working professional’s calendar
Medicine doesn’t bolt a placement year on — the placement is built into the degree itself:
From year 3 (year 2 at some schools), students are embedded in NHS teaching hospitals on rotation — the university arranges everything.
The “integrated” option in medicine: an extra research year granting a BSc. At Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and Imperial it is compulsory — a second degree and a research CV before finals.
A placement anywhere in the world in the final years — many students spend 6–8 weeks in hospitals abroad.
Virtually 100% of graduates enter paid Foundation training. But here is what surprises parents: medics are among the most heavily poached students in the milk round. Strategy consultancies and investment banks actively recruit medical graduates for healthcare advisory, life-science coverage and quantitative roles — a medical degree from a top school has become one of the most bankable credentials in the City.
