Results day is one morning, but it feels like it decides everything. It doesn’t — and having a clear plan for the first hour, whichever way the grades go, makes an enormous difference to how the rest of the day unfolds.
If the Grades Meet or Beat the Offer
Confirm the place is secured through UCAS Track before celebrating too hard — it is usually automatic, but it is worth the two minutes to check. Then let your child enjoy the moment. This is genuinely one of the milestones of their life so far.
If the Grades Narrowly Miss
- Do not panic-call the university in the first ten minutes. Universities are dealing with thousands of calls; a calm, prepared call an hour later is far more productive than a frantic one immediately.
- Check UCAS Track first. Many universities confirm places even when grades narrowly miss the offer, particularly if the course was undersubscribed. This can already be resolved before you pick up the phone.
- If not confirmed, call the university admissions line directly — not the general switchboard. Ask specifically whether they will still honour the offer. Be ready with the exact grades achieved.
If Clearing Becomes the Reality
Clearing is not a consolation prize — a significant number of students find a course through Clearing that suits them better than their original choice. The key is speed and preparation:
- Have a shortlist of 4–6 backup courses and universities ready before results day, not after.
- Call universities directly rather than only browsing the Clearing lists online — places move fast and phone calls get faster answers.
- Have the personal statement and predicted/actual grades to hand; admissions staff will ask for both immediately.
What Not to Say
However the day goes, avoid framing it as a referendum on your child’s worth or intelligence. A grade boundary is frequently a matter of a single mark. The most useful thing a parent can offer on results day is calm, practical next steps — not verdicts.
