For Families on the US System
Many international schools — including several in Qatar — teach the American curriculum: a High School Diploma built on GPA, credits and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. It is an excellent, well-respected system in its own right. But it was not built for the UK’s early-specialisation model, and the honest question every family should ask is whether it leads straight into a UK degree, or via a Foundation Year first.
Broad by design: English, Maths, Science, Social Studies and electives continue right through to graduation at 17–18.
Depth is optional and self-selected through AP (Advanced Placement) courses — college-level classes a student can choose to add on top of the standard diploma.
Assessed continuously: GPA (Grade Point Average) is built from four years of coursework, tests and participation, not one final exam season.
Students typically apply to a university broadly, choosing or confirming a specific major once enrolled.
Narrow and deep by 16: three or four subjects (A-Level) or six with a compulsory core (IB), chosen specifically to support one target degree.
Depth is the default, not an opt-in extra — every subject studied is already at a level roughly comparable to a first-year US college course.
Assessed predominantly by final examination at 18, testing two years of accumulated, specialised knowledge.
Students apply directly to one named course (Medicine, Engineering, Economics) via UCAS — there is no undeclared or general first year.
The gap isn’t about ability — a bright student thrives in either system. It’s about specialisation. UK universities assume 13 years of schooling culminating in genuine subject-specific depth. A standard, unmodified High School Diploma alone typically does not demonstrate that depth on its own, which is precisely the gap a Foundation Year exists to close.
The honest, university-verified answer: it depends entirely on how many AP courses were taken, and at what grade — not on the Diploma itself.
A structured, university-taught preparation year that sits before Year 1 of a named degree — not a lesser qualification, but a bridge built specifically for exactly this situation.
On successful completion, the student progresses directly into Year 1 of their chosen course at that university (subject to meeting the agreed progression grades).
For 2026/27, foundation year fees are capped separately from standard degree fees: £6,165 for classroom-based subjects (Humanities, Business, Law, Social Sciences) and £9,790 for laboratory or studio-based subjects (Sciences, Engineering, Architecture) — the same as a standard year.
It is treated as Year 1 of the student’s finance entitlement, so the full four years remain funded as a single package where a UK-recognised loan applies; for international/Qatar-based families paying directly, it is simply one additional year of fees before the standard three.
Many well-regarded universities run integrated Foundation Years directly, including UCL, the University of Manchester and King’s College London — these are university-taught, not outsourced, and lead into the university’s own named degrees.
Neither. It is a genuine, respected route used by thousands of international students every year — particularly useful where a family wants to keep a top university in reach without having engineered five AP courses by Grade 11.
