GCSE → A-Level/IB → Career

GCSE options are chosen at 13 or 14 — often years before a family has thought seriously about university, let alone career. But by the time A-Level or IB choices are made at 16, some doors are already closing. These ten flowcharts work backwards from the degree, so GCSE choices can be made forwards.

General Principles Before the Detail

Triple vs Combined Science

Triple Science (three separate GCSEs) is strongly preferred for any STEM or clinical route — Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, Natural Sciences. Combined Science can be a genuine handicap at the most selective schools.

Mathematics Is the Universal Gatekeeper

Of the ten courses in this guide, eight either require or strongly reward a top-grade GCSE Maths. It is the single subject worth protecting above all others.

Further Maths GCSE

Offered by some schools as an additional qualification alongside GCSE Maths. Where available, it is excellent early evidence for Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science and Economics — but it is not universally offered, so its absence is not held against a student.

Keep Options Open Until 16

Where a student is unsure between two of these paths, choose the GCSE combination that satisfies both — nearly always Triple Science plus the highest achievable Maths grade.

Why This Combination

Medical schools filter on triple science GCSEs before they even look at A-Level choices — combined science can quietly close doors at the most selective schools. Chemistry is non-negotiable at both A-Level and IB; Biology is expected everywhere and required almost everywhere.

Why This Combination

Dentistry follows medicine’s science requirements almost exactly, but with slightly more flexibility on the third subject — and admissions tutors do notice evidence of fine motor skill from art, DT or music.

Why This Combination

Pharmacy is more mathematically demanding day-to-day than its clinical reputation suggests — dosage calculations reward a genuinely strong Maths grade, which is exactly why Chemistry plus Maths is the safest GCSE and A-Level pairing.

Why This Combination

This is a mathematics degree wearing an economics label. GCSE Maths sets the trajectory; A-Level Further Maths (or IB Maths AA HL) is what separates a competitive LSE/Cambridge application from an average one.

Why This Combination

Law is the most subject-flexible course in this guide — what matters is proof of sustained, structured argument. History, English and Philosophy consistently produce the strongest applicants; A-Level Law itself is not required and rarely helps.

Why This Combination

Business degrees at the strongest schools have quietly become quantitative — treat the Maths requirement as seriously as an economics applicant would, especially for LSE, Warwick or UCL.

Why This Combination

Engineering has zero tolerance for a weak Maths or Physics grade at GCSE — both subjects compound every year, and by A-Level the gap between a 6 and a 9 at GCSE Maths has usually become unbridgeable without intervention.

Why This Combination

Counterintuitively, A-Level or IB Computer Science itself is optional at nearly every top department — what they actually screen for is mathematical strength. Further Maths (or Maths AA HL) is the single biggest differentiator on this application.

Why This Combination

This is the one course where Further Mathematics at A-Level (or the AA HL route at IB) is not merely preferred but assumed. Students without it are rarely competitive at Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial or Warwick.

Why This Combination

Natural Sciences deliberately rewards breadth: students who dropped a science too early at GCSE or A-Level narrow their own options before the university even sees the application. Keep three sciences alive as long as possible.
